APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Before application, apply a test patch to ensure product compatibility and colour satisfaction.

It is important to take into account the paints slow drying times when planning an application.

GENERAL SURFACE PREPARATION
All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free from any contaminants including dirt, algae, grease, wax and loose or flaking paint.

PREPARATION FOR WOODEN SURFACES
Sand down previously painted or varnished surfaces prior to paint application.

It is important to note that wooden surfaces that are not properly prepared can cause difficulties during application and may lead to an uneven colour or poor finish.

For application onto old bare timber apply pure boiled linseed oil as a sealer coat and wipe off any excess.

Depending on the porosity of the wood a priming/mist coat may need to be applied.

Apply a priming/mist coat by thinning using one of the following methods.
Method 1 – Stand the tin of paint in a container of very hot water.
Method 2 – Add up to 20% by weight of pure boiled linseed oil.
Method 3 – Add up to 20% by weight of genuine turpentine.
Method 4 – Add up to 20% by weight of pure boiled linseed oil and genuine turpentine.

Note: adding genuine turpentine does reduce the solids content and introduces solvent and flammability.

  • Once all of the surface preparation is complete apply a very thin coat with a good quality brush, making sure to brush out well.
  • Apply a further thin coat as above.

A minimum of 24 hours must be observed between coats. Please note again the paint is very slow drying, up to two weeks for full drying, weather dependant.

A minimum of 24 hours must be observed between coats – longer if possible.

Once all coats have been applied allow up to two full weeks for the paint to fully dry, weather dependent.

Where possible application should take place off site/not in situ so the paint has sufficient time to cure before installation of doors, window frames etc.

AFTER PAINTING
Use solvent to clean application tools.

WARNING:
Application cloths and soiled rags may self ignite without warning. Dispose of safely by laying flat and allowing to dry or clean with warm soapy water to avoid fire risks.

LINSEED OIL GLOSS MAINTENANCE

REPAINT & TOUCH UP APPLICATION
We strongly recommend applying a full single coat to the damaged areas to achieve best results and to help avoid any visible variation in colour tones and finish.

If a touch up approach is chosen then we recommend ensuring the same preparation and application techniques are used making sure the touch ups are feathered in to make the transition from new paint to old paint less noticeable.

OUR PAINTS ARE HAND CRAFTED
Each batch of paint is manufactured to tight specifications and quality control guidelines. Slight variations in colour and sheen may occur between batches. We therefore recommend that where possible paint from the same batch is used for any repair or touch up.

If a new batch is required intermix paint with any remaining paint from the original batch. This will help to avoid any visible variation in colour tones and finish.

TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE PAINT
Pure Linseed Oil Gloss can be rejuvinated by simply applying a coat of pure boiled linseed oil to the surface periodically.
