MASONRY PAINT MIXING AND APPLICATION VIDEOS

Mark has spent some time creating some application videos for the masonry paint. Showing how to mix the paint and then application using one of our Limewash brushes.

WHAT IS EARLES MASONRY PAINT

Supplied as a powder which is simply mixed with water at the point of use. Earles Masonry Paint is made from a careful blend of natural minerals with no added polymers or solvents. Tested and found to be as breathable as limewash and one hundred times more breathable than a standard polymer-based masonry paint. Earles Masonry Paint works by forming a protective, weatherproof bond to all masonry surfaces and excels in areas where other polymer-based paints will ultimately fail such as areas exposed to damp or harsh weather conditions.

THE BENEFITS OF EARLES MASONRY PAINT

  • High vapour permeability/breathability with an SD Value of less that 0.01
  • Zero polymer content
  • Suitable for a wide range of surfaces
  • Can be applied over existing masonry paint
  • Can be used internally as well as externally
  • Resists frost and water-related damage
  • Can fill rough and open textures
  • Naturally mould and bacteria resistant
  • Easy mixing and application
  • UV Resistant
  • Ideal for coastal and marine environments

WHERE CAN I USE EARLES MASONRY PAINT?

Earles Masonry Paint can be used on all masonry surfaces including lime-based renders, mortars, plasters, bricks, breeze blocks, cobb and more. Where the substrate has low porosity such as previously painted areas, glazed bricks or pebble dash it is essential to use Earles Surface Primer.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

GENERAL SURFACE PREPARATION
Ensure the surface is free of all weak and loose deposits and contamination such as dust, dirt, moss, lichen, grease, oil, sealer and anything that could affect the coating application.

PRIMER COAT
Earles Masonry Paint Surface Primer is recommended when the paint is applied over any polymer-based coatings, glazed bricks, old unpainted renders, pebble dash or friable surfaces.

DAMPEN DOWN
If primer has not been necessary, dampen down the substrate with water immediately prior to application of the paint. This can be done in sections to ensure the area to be painted doesn’t dry out.

Note: If painting over a previously painted surface where the previous paint has failed leaving areas of bare masonry, additional preparation is required. Apply two coats of Earles Masonry Paint onto the bare masonry areas before painting the entire surface with a further two coats of the paint.

MIXING THE PAINT

  • Mix the paint by volume using equal quantities of water and powder, eg. one cup of water to one cup of powder.
  • Gradually add the paint powder to the clean water whilst thoroughly mixing with a low-speed powered mixing paddle.
  • Continue mixing, ensuring all powder has been thoroughly incorporated. If a thicker mix is desired add more powder at this stage and mix thoroughly.
  • Let the mix stand for 2 minutes and then remix for 30 seconds. Avoid adding additional water to the powder.
  • Once mixed, Earles Masonry Paint should be used within 2 hours. Stir during use to prevent settlement. The paint will naturally thicken over time. Do not add more water to the mix as this will affect the curing process.

PAINT APPLICATION

  • Apply the first coat of paint evenly to the surface using a brush, an HVLP or a compressor based spray system. Do not use an airless spray system. Spray application will give the smoothest finish and the most consistent thickness of paint.
  • If brush application is preferred it is essential to ensure that an equal thickness of paint is applied evenly over the whole surface.
  • Allow a minimum of 6-8 hours between coats under normal circumstances. A longer curing time may be necessary in cold and damp conditions.
  • Apply a second coat of the paint and allow it to fully cure.

Additional information for hot weather or application onto very porous surfaces such as lime render and cobb.

Prepare the Earles Masonry Paint mix ready for use. Thoroughly wet the surface with water and immediately commence painting. If rapid drying is apparent after 1 hour, mist the coated surface with water, this will aid the curing process. Repeat this process for the second coat of paint.

CURING PROCESS
Earles Masonry Paint is unique, it cures by hydration and during this process the paint may appear chalky or slightly transparent. The paint will oxidise and cure over 7 days, resulting in a super matt, dust-free finish. After this initial cure the paint will continue to strengthen over time.

Note: After application on mixed substrates such as existing paints some initial colour variation may be visible. This is completely natural and will even out as the paint cures and hydrates. This effect can also be apparent when the paint has been applied to surfaces which have a high moisture content

Browse our range of fade resistant colours available in 5kg and 10kg sizes. Earles Masonry Paint has no added plastics, polymers or chemicals and is supplied as a powder which is simply mixed with water just before application.

As a guide, 10kg of Earles Masonry Paint will make 14 litres of paint and will cover approximately 25m2 using the required two coat system.
